FAA Minimum Flight Training Requirements

To earn your Private Pilot Certificate, the FAA requires a minimum of 40 flight hours, which include:

  • 30 hours of dual instruction with a certified flight instructor
  • 10 hours of solo flight, including at least 3 hours of cross-country flying
  • 3 hours of dual night training
  • 3 hours of preparation for the practical test

While 40 hours is the minimum, most students log closer to 50–60 hours to reach proficiency and confidence in all required maneuvers and scenarios.

What You’ll Learn

Your training covers essential piloting skills, from hover and takeoff techniques to navigation, emergency procedures, and controlled airspace operations. You’ll also gain a foundation in aerodynamics, meteorology, regulations, and flight planning during ground school.
